Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a
computerized technology for capturing,
storing, updating, manipulating, analyzing,
and displaying spatial data. GIS is an
analytical tool that helps researchers to
display spatial relationships between map
features. It helps to answer basic questions
such as: "Where is it?", "What has changed
since?",
"What spatial patterns exist?", and
"What if?". Because of its great analytical
component, GIS is used in many disciplines
including agriculture, environmental
research, geology, archeology, forestry and
natural resource management.
ESRI-SC uses ArcGIS 9.3®, MapObjects®, ArcIMS®,
and MOIMS®
for modeling and analysis, for development
of GIS databases and development of
Web-based GIS applications in its
environmental projects.
