Water quality and, in particular, drinking water quality, are primary concerns of any environmental program and the Geographic Information Systems group at ESRI-USC is no exception. Over the last few years ESRI-USC has worked on projects spawned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s  (US EPA) Source Water Assessment Program.  SWAP is derived from Safe Water Drinking Act (SDWA) Amendments of 1996.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) requested ESRI-USC assistance in formulating their SWAP plan for surface water.  One of ESRI-USC’s recommendations to SC DHEC was to establish an interactive, web-based, source water database, of which a prototype is now online.  This is the first such web based SWAP database in the nation.

Regarding groundwater susceptibilities, ESRI-USC developed the methodology for the deepest to-date contamination potential analysis of a groundwater system (at DOE’s Savannah River Site).  The U.S. EPA defines aquifer sensitivity/contamination potential as: "A measure of the ease with which a contaminant applied on or near the land surface can migrate to an aquifer. It is a function of the intrinsic characteristics of both the geologic materials comprising the aquifer as well as overlying saturated and unsaturated materials. It is independent of land use and the types of contaminants introduced."
